Examples & tips

Example: Buy 100 shares at ₹150, then 50 more at ₹120 → total 150 shares, total investment ₹21,000, average ₹140 per share.

Tip: Averaging down (buying more at a lower price) brings your average closer to the current market price, but also concentrates risk in a single stock.

Frequently asked questions

How is the average price calculated?

Weighted average: total investment ÷ total quantity. Each purchase is multiplied by its quantity, then all purchases are summed and divided by the total number of shares.

Does this include brokerage or taxes?

No. The result is a pure average of share prices. Add brokerage, STT, GST, and stamp duty separately to get the true cost basis.

What is break-even price?

The price per share at which selling your entire position would cover exactly what you paid. It is equal to the weighted average.

Can I use this for mutual funds or crypto?

Yes. The math is the same for any asset bought in multiple lots at different prices.
